Oil Change FAQs

What is an oil change? Why is it so important?

Oil changes are meant to drain ineffective oil from your vehicle's engine and replace it with fresh oil. Not only are regularly scheduled oil changes a great way to extend the overall life of your vehicle's engine, but oil changes also have the ability to optimize engine performance and fuel efficiency by lubricating and clearing your engine of debris.

How often should I have my oil changed?

In general, Ford recommends sticking to the following oil change schedule:

  • 2008 and newer model-year vehicles: every 7,500 miles or every six months, whichever comes first
  • 2007 and older model-year vehicles: every 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first

If you often find yourself driving across rugged terrain or in unfavorable road conditions, Ford recommends following an alternate oil change schedule:

  • 2008 and newer model-year vehicles: every 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first
  • 2007 and older model-year vehicles: every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever comes first

How can I tell if my car needs an oil change?

To check your oil level, simply check to see if your vehicle's oil level has dropped. You can also check the color of the oil on your dipstick to see whether or not is a nice transparent brown color, or if it is dark and thick. If your previous oil change wasn't documented or posted on your windshield with a handy sticker, you can also tell by a light on your dashboard that notes that maintenance is required.

What's the difference between synthetic and conventional oil?

When you change your vehicle's oil, you have two types of oil to pick from - conventional oil, or synthetic oil. While conventional oil is designed to maintain its stability over long periods of time, it is also able to provide lubrication at high temperatures. Meanwhile, synthetic oil is meant to increase the performance and life of high-mileage cars, while also increasing your car's fuel mileage by using specially designed lubricants.
